Ongwediva - The Trust hosted media representatives as guest chefs during a special fish
cooking demonstration held on 23 August 2026 at the Fisheries Hall, as part of the Trust’s
participation in the 2026 Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair.
The cooking demonstration formed part of the Trust’s ongoing educational initiatives aimed
at promoting fish consumption among Namibians by equipping consumers with the practical
knowledge, skills and confidence to prepare nutritious and appealing fish dishes at home.
For the special session, the Trust invited its media partners to step out from behind their
cameras, microphones and notebooks and take on the role of guest chefs. Media
representatives from the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Northern radio
powerhouse Shipi FM, and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology
(MICT), Oshana Regional Office, participated in the cooking demonstration.
The initiative was aimed to give media practitioners a first-hand experience of some of the
challenges households may encounter when preparing fish at home, including selecting fish,
handling it correctly and preparing it into simple, tasty meals.
The activity also provided an opportunity for the media to better understand the purpose
behind the NFCPT’s cooking demonstrations and their importance in addressing one of the
barriers to fish consumption in parts of the country: limited knowledge and confidence in
preparing fish.
While Namibia is endowed with valuable marine resources, access to fish alone does not
necessarily translate into regular consumption. Some consumers may be unfamiliar with
different fish species, preparation methods or simple ways of incorporating fish into
everyday family meals. Through its cooking demonstrations, the Trust seeks to bridge this
knowledge gap by demonstrating that fish can be prepared in practical, affordable and
enjoyable ways.
The participation of media partners was particularly significant, given the important role the
media plays in communicating the Trust’s mandate, programmes and educational messages
to communities across the country. By experiencing the cooking demonstration themselves,
media practitioners gained a deeper appreciation of the educational value of these activities
and the challenges the Trust seeks to address through its fish consumption promotion
initiatives.
The guest-chef initiative also created an interactive and engaging platform for the Trust and
the media to strengthen their working relationship while learning together. Beyond
preparing and tasting the dishes, the session encouraged participants to reflect on how
practical cooking knowledge can influence household food choices and contribute to making
fish a more regular part of the Namibian diet.
The NFCPT remains committed to using innovative and practical educational approaches to
promote fish consumption. Through initiatives such as cooking demonstrations, the Trust
continues to move beyond simply encouraging Namibians to eat more fish by empowering
them with the knowledge and confidence to prepare it themselves.
The Trust believes that when consumers are comfortable preparing fish, understand its
nutritional value and have access to simple preparation ideas, fish can become a more
regular and enjoyable component of household meals.
